Beginning Sunday, November 17, we will have Advent Resources available at our worship gatherings. We will hand these out until we run out, so make sure to stop by the Advent Resource table and pick up a devotional book and/or Ethos Kids Advent Kit. We are also encouraging each home to gather around the Advent candles, just as we gather around the corporately on Sundays.

From Heaven: An Advent Devotional Book

ETHOS DOWNTOWN: We will have one copy of From Heaven, by A.W. Tozer, to give each family unit (one per family, one per single person). Our hope is that together we will engage and spend time reflecting each day of this Advent season — and we’ll be journeying through the same book together. If you won’t be with us in person and would like a copy of the book to begin reading with us on December 1, you can order one online.

Ethos Kids Advent Kit

Our Ethos Kids pastors have put together a beautiful Advent Kit for your family to use in your home each week of this season. From a scripture reading calendar to a thoughtful communal prayer as you light your candles, from a conversation card to tangible items to hold in your hands — this Advent Kit has been prepared to help you and your children draw closer to Jesus as we celebrate his first coming and anticipate his second coming!

Please stop by the Ethos Kids table or Advent Resource table to pick up an Advent Kit and Scripture Calendar. If you won’t be with us in person and would like to follow along with our Scripture Calendar, you can download a digital copy and print it at home!

Advent Wreath Liturgy

We light the Advent candles in the wreath on Sundays in our gatherings, but there is something special about gathering around the Advent wreath and candles in your home. Whether you live alone, have roommates, are married, or have a house full of kids — this moment of reflection and prayer brings deep meaning to the season as you pause in the busyness and welcome Christ in your home.

We encourage you to purchase or gather items to create a centerpiece on your table. Once a week at a meal (for example, Sunday dinner), pause and light the Advent candle for the week. We have prepared a short liturgy to help you spend a moment in reflection and prayer. You can download this liturgy and print it at home to use throughout the season.

Advent Wreath Ideas

Here are a few ideas to get you started as you gather supplies for your own Advent wreath.

  • Wreath/Candleholders: You’ll light five candles throughout the season. You can use 5 individual candleholders or votives, or you can purchase an Advent wreath like this one, this one, or this one. There are many styles out there — choose what works for you.

  • Candles: Gather or purchase five candles. In our Ethos worship gatherings, we light the traditional pink and purple candles to represent the weeks of Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love and a fifth candle, which is white, is lit as the Christ candle. Some prefer to use all white candles in their Advent wreath. If your wreath/candleholder has spots for five tapers, then you will only need those five. If your wreath/candleholder has spots for four candles, you will need a fifth candle and holder for it. You can use a taper candle or a pillar candle — whatever works best for your centerpiece!
